The Space Shuttle Era, Winding Down

The space shuttle Discovery is currently on its final mission. Only two more flight remain for the shuttle program as a whole – it will, in all likelihood, be finished by the end of the year.

NASA anticipated great things from its workhorse when when shuttle program was announced,  but thirty years later most of the proposed goals remain unrealized. And the end of the program begs the all important question: what’s next? (Pictured, Discovery on the eve before its final launch. February 23, 2011.)
