EDITORIAL:

The summer solstice and midsummer’s day in the Northern Hemisphere have been and gone and now it’s time for a new edition of Whewell’s Gazette the weekly #histSTM links list bringing all of the histories of science, technology and medicine that we could find in cyberspace over the last seven days.

“Well that’s it! Summer solstice’s been and gone. It’s all downhill from here on in to winter” – Thony Christie (@rmathematicus)

The summer solstice of course brought with it lots of people posting images of the solstice at Stonehenge, which has become a sort of universal symbol for the summer solstice, a not ironic situation as the latest archaeological theories think that the world’s most famous Neolithic monument is probably orientated to the winter solstice rather than the summer one.

WS Goodwin’s pioneering Stonehenge maps (1867-1887) – Map Library (@BLMaps)

This brings up one important point concerning astronomical orientations in archaeoastronomy, they are not as precise as is often claimed. It is actually rather difficult with naked eye observation to exactly determine either of the solstices more accurately than within a couple of days. So remember every time somebody claims an astronomical orientation for an ancient monument that claim should be treated with a dose of healthy scepticism.

This is probably Goodwin, gazing wistfully up at the stones in 1867 whilst with the Ordnance Survey

The Diplodocus mount sent to Great Britain in 1905 by the Carnegie Museum was a plaster replica.  This mount, presented to the new Senckenberg Natural History Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1907, was the real thing.  It had been found at Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming in 1899 by W. D. Matthew and P. Kaison.  The cost of preparing this mount was born personally by the president of the American Museum of Natural History, Morris K. Jessup.
